Carpenter ants

Carpenter Ants:

Also known as the Night Ant or Wood Ants.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood, instead as suggested by their name generally will build their nests in rotting or moist wood. They will also nest in old termite galleries and under rocks.

Water attracts carpenter ants and moist wood around leaky pipes and drains provide an ideal environment for them to nest.

When carpenter ants burrow into wood they generate sawdust or frass that can pile up beneath the site of their activity. Their frass looks like dust and will often contain parts of dead insects.

These ants usually feed on insects, sweet foods and sometimes house hold waste. They do not sting but they do bite. They are more active at night and are about 10-15mm long and black or tan in color.
